 Careers in the Common Good

Careers in the Common Good is an extension of higher education's public mission. It describes both academic and professional pathways for students to engage in their community.

Academically, Careers in the Common Good describes fields of study that focus on social responsibility and that are dedicated to addressing community needs.  Examples of academic departments that align with Careers in the Common Good are Social Work, Education, Sociology, Fire Science, Healthcare Professions, Environmental Science, and Psychology.

Professionally, Careers in the Common Good are jobs that have at their core an ethic of serving the greater good.  These careers of service connect personal values with professional life, positively impacting local communities throughout the Four Corners states.

UCAN Serve was created to work with Careers in the Common Good programs on Four Corners campuses, supporting student service through academic engagement.  Though it may be implemented differently on various UCAN Serve campuses, the support of Careers in the Common Good programs strengthens students' civic commitments and strengthens the capacity of the communities in which they serve.

"Four Corners campuses have embraced UCAN Serve with great enthusiasm and success, and have integrated the program into colleges and disciplines such as education, natural resource management, human development, and agriculture.  UCAN Serve is an opportunity for higher education to support students as they actively apply best practices and knowledge from their disciplines in community-based settings."
