What can AmeriCorps members do?

In the Four Corners region, the work that UCAN Serve AmeriCorps members do is as diverse as the individuals themselves.  UCAN members can serve in three different goal areas:

  • education

  • public health and safety

  • community strengthening

Depending on your campus program, individuals may tutor and mentor K-12 children and teens, recruit and train volunteers for non-profit organizations, develop plans to revitalize neighborhoods and the environment, serve in community health organizations, develop and promote service programs on campus, and develop partnerships with local community agencies, among many other service projects.

Oftentimes, members complete their UCAN Serve hours as service through their academic program.  Many Careers in the Common Good programs have an academic service component that places students in nonprofit organizations as part of community-based learning.  These academic service hours may count toward a term of service in AmeriCorps.

Additionally, your school may have service programs in place, have a Center for Service Learning, or may allow you to choose your own service project. As an AmeriCorps member you may attend statewide workshops and conferences and participate in leadership trainings and service events.

"I have, as a student, been able to serve with individuals who are working for productive changes in my community.  I have established strong organizational skills, improved my communication skills, heightened my leadership abilities, and successfully completed service projects through my experiences with UCAN Serve.  I feel strengthened as a person because of my involvement with my community through service."

-Vanessa Bohaty, UCAN Serve member-
