How we Serve: UCAN in the Four Corners Region

The UCAN Serve program provides support for students engaged in unpaid service as part of their academic and extracurricular programs.  Our region faces professional shortages in fields such as healthcare & education, and the connection between academic service & careers of service is critical.  The UCAN Serve program helps to address these professional shortages by directing student service into priority areas through nonprofit agencies.  Our members are the future of Careers in the Common Good in the Four Corners, making an impact through academic service.

Highlights of Service

"I've learned through AmeriCorps there is more to service than just programs, hours, and numbers.  Service is about people, people who at this time in their life may need a little help.  It is what people give back that has kept me so involved.  Happiness, contentment, and gratitude are some of the words that explain what I have received in return for my service through UCAN Serve.  It has given me an avenue to get involved and has provided experiences that I can never replace."

UCAN Serve Regional AmeriCorps Conference Update!

From February 22-25th, 85 UCAN Serve members and Coordinators gathered in Denver for the 2006 UCAN Serve Regional AmeriCorps Conference.  Participants engaged in events and workshops focused on diversity, community development, leadership, and fundraising, among others.

In the evenings, UCAN members and Coordinators enjoyed group dinners in downtown Denver as well as a trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to see IMAX and Gates Planetarium shows.

"I don't think I'm overstating anything by saying this conference gave me so much to think about-both professionally and personally.  Being surrounded by so many amazing people made me want to be a more engaged individual."
