What in the world is Dave up to?

Or, where is Dave hiding?

I'm on sabbatical!  For the 2008-2009 academic year I'll be traveling and doing research.  I won't blog everything (boooring), but as the year progresses I'll post some of the highlights on this page.  If you need to contact me, feel free to send an email. I'll answer as soon as I'm back from wherever.

He's using glaciers as computers.

Say what?  If you don't think I'm too crazy, see details here.

He's modeling the obesity epidemic.

As a population, we are overweight and gaining more every year. It's a major public health crisis in desperate need of a solution.  Ok sure, you say, but what's this got to do with computer science and physics?  Cellular automata!  See details here.

He's travelling and skiing.

Part of a sabbatical is taking the time to see new scenery, talk to different people, get a different perspective, and revitalize with new ideas.  For me, that means skiing, backpacking, and traveling the world.  A sabbatical is only half-time pay, so there's motivation to get out there...

Rafting Cataract Canyon (October 2008)

Biking the Danube River in Austria. (September 2008)

Backpacking San Juan Mountains, CO. (August 2008)

Hawai'i, Big Island. (July 2008)

Skiing. (May 2008 - now)  I do a lot of this.  Every month, all year.

He's doing art.

Well sorta'. With Judy Gardner, I'm creating a series of science-based images for a show in October.  Judy is the real artist in this collaboration, and I'm supplying base graphics which she modifies in wonderful ways.  Check out some preliminary samples.
