How Can My Friends See My Web Page?

So your web page is ready for its world debut.  Here is one way to get it out into cyberspace for all to see. 

There are several ways to get your web page published.  One way to publish your site is to download it onto the free web hosting site called "Geocities".  Geocities is sponsored by the company Yahoo!.  Of course, nothing is for free.  Geocities will be posting advertising on your web site in exchange for the free server space. 

These instructions are general and reflect my limited experience with Geocities.  I found Geocities easy to use.  In fact, I created a simple web page and published it onto the World Wide Web in less than 30 minutes.

Follow these instructions:

1. Make sure your homepage is called "index.html". If you have created a web page and named it anything other than index.html, you need to rename it right away.  Each web site only needs to have one page called index.html.  The name index.html tells the computer that this page is the homepage and always open this page first. 

2.  Open your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) and search for "Geocities".

3.  Open the Geocities web site.  Geocities is sponsored by Yahoo!.

4.  You will have to sign up as a new user.  This is important because you need to be granted space on the Geocities' server.

5.  As you sign up and answer all of the questions, make sure you write everything down on a piece of paper.  You do not want to forget your ID, password and web address.  You will need to be creative in coming up with an ID.  It seems like just about every word has been taken.

6.  If you have created a web page using raw html code (as you should have in my classes; no fair using FrontPage, etc.), you will need to Upload your web page to the Geocities server.  Look for the "Upload" button.  It might say "Upload / FTP". 

7.  At the Upload screen, look for the section that says "Easy Upload".

8.  At the "Easy Upload" part of your screen, click the "Browse" button and locate the file you want to upload.

9.  If your web page has pictures, you will need to upload your picture files also. 

10.  Once you have found all of the files you want to upload, press the "Upload" button.  I found the Upload button at the bottom of the screen. 

11. Some where on the screen it should say "Upload Successful".

12.  Go to the "File Manager".

13.  At the File Manager, you can view your published Web Page.  At this point, the whole world should be able to see your page.
