In Fall 2012, I am teaching 

• two sections of the introductory calculus-based general physics course, PH304A, including conservation laws, Newtonian mechanics, and special relativity;
• a upper-division course in computer architecture, CS 439.

My research interests are in the area of experimental "nuclear" physics. The quotation marks reflect the fact that nuclear physics is increasingly an approach to the study of subatomic systems, complementary to high-energy physics: it is not limited to the interactions of protons and neutrons within nuclei.  In recent years, I have been involved in several efforts:

• Measurement of the rate of muon capture on the proton: the muCap experiment
• ...which has evolved into a measurement of the rate of muon capture on the deuteron: the muSun experiment
• Measurement of radiation backgrounds at the historic Homestake Mine, site of the Sanford Underground Research Facility
• A research program at Los Alamos National Laboratory to develop techniques to detect concealed nuclear weapons material
  
• Measurement of the positive muon lifetime: the muLan experiment
• Studies of reactor antineutrinos: the KamLAND experiment
• Measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment: the muon g-2 experiment.  We are planning to move this experiment to Fermilab and continue it there.
