Course
Description: Involves
placement in industry, government, organization or agency for applied
learning. Internship enrollment is
restricted to advanced communication students with a minimum 2.5 GPA. There are no GPA restrictions on a Practicum.
Course
Objectives: Upon
completion of this course, each of you should be capable of:
1.
Understanding the function of the
workplace and industry where you intern.
2.
Identifying the roles and
responsibilities of various personnel.
3.
Evaluating industry practices.
4.
Melding traditional classroom
knowledge with experiential training.
5.
Practicing skills for the
development of effective work practices.
Course
Requirements:
1. Learning
Plan.
2. Journals. Each student will record entries regarding their
field experiences into a journal. All
details of each work day’s activities for a 3-week period should be
included. Notes can be kept about
problems with supervisors or interactions with other personnel. Feel free to
reflect on the work tasks and environment. Journals will be collected twice
during the semester. Journal logging
periods are September 28 – October 16 and from November 9-27.
3. Internship/Practicum
Evaluation. A.
Identify your original goals and objectives. Assess your progress in a tangible way. How did you measure your progress? B.
Evaluate your own performance and experience in this field placement. What lessons have you learned? How has your experience affected your career goals? C.
Describe the work site. Discuss
the supervision, structure, communication systems, level of responsibility you
were assigned and other features related to the working environment. D.
Explain whether or not you would recommend this internship/practicum to
other students. Cite specific reasons
for your recommendation.
4. Attendance. You are expected to attend all group
meetings. And, of course, you are
expected to regularly meet your field hours.
A minimum of 120 hours over the semester is required.

Grades will be assigned as follows:
100 - 90 points ..........A
89 - 80 points ...........B
79 - 70 points ...........C
69 - 60 points ...........D
Below 60 points ........Not Passing
