Notes for September 21st:

Oleanna

John

tense-not enough time spent at home
Not assertive- he’s interrupted
Condescending- unlike Carol, he would remain calm

Interaction with Carol

Several times, he turns his back to her while speaking on the phone. Wants to maintain separation of personal and professional

-exterior world exerts pressure; he is slipping

Crosses line with " I am not your father"
Goal=to understand/learn according to own measure
-unrelated to grade
"I was told I was stupid" = relate to me, understand yourself under my terms
During phone conversations, rattled by pressure

-too much = explosion
Agenda separate from Carol’s
-"begin by succeeding"
-philosophy of education
relies on language
later in play, job = primary concern
-opposed to carol’s concern regarding grade in Act 1

Carol

rushed- forced to present her case in 10 minutes

Interaction with John
tell me what to do
-if I read and take notes, I should pass
"help me" = teach me
-pass me so I can help others
ponders why John remains despite house/family commitments

Why does he want to be personal with me
-invasion of privacy

-added meaning during phone conversation, "I’ ve been with a student"

"why did you stay with me when you should have gone"?
-John responds "I like you".
Agenda shifts as a result of reflection and group influence
-success with sexual harassment
-no longer what must I do to pass
troubled by language

-confused with "precept", "concept", "paradigm"

-instead, relies on feeling

Group influence: patriarchal society = vile, manipulative, classist, pornographic
-subjective statements
"These are not allegations. These are facts"
-oversimplification implies naivety
Demands john display personal accountability
-"By your own actions"
