Course Objectives:
The Collegium Musicum is designed as a musical forum in which participants are
introduced to the study and performance of music before 1750 and contemporary
works and arrangements for early instruments. Through a historical survey of
the musical literature, its style, structure, and function, ensemble members
will discover the rich variety of Western European art music while developing a
working understanding of performance practices, vocabulary, and musical terms.
Areas of
Study:
This semester we will
concentrate on music from the Middle Ages
(c1200-1450). We will study some of the monophonic forms of chant repertoire and also some of the earliest notated forms of instrumental
music, including the estampie and salterello. We will also examine and perform
some of the earliest forms of polyphony, including an organum, a polyphonic
genre developed by the composers of the Notre Dame School in the early 13th
century. We will also work on one or two mass movements from Guillaume de
Machaut’s Le Messe de Nostre Dame,
considered one of the earliest, if not the earliest, polyphonic settings of the
Mass ordinary. Other significant composers will include Guillaume Du Fay (ca.
1397-1474) and John Dunstable (ca. 1390-1453).
Required Materials:
Everyone will need a
pencil and a black three-ring music folder. Music will be
provided and distributed by the director.
Music
Policy:
You are responsible for
your music. Please feel free to mark (in pencil) in your music
any notes or symbols that may better help you perform your part. However, any
published music must be returned at the end of
the semester.
Practice Requirements: Participants should typically plan on spending
at least two to four hours a week (outside of the regularly scheduled
rehearsals) practicing individual parts, working on pronunciation, intonation,
memorization (for solo pieces), and in sectionals. Registered students and
advanced music minors/majors will be asked to schedule
and lead weekly sectional rehearsals outside of class.
Attendance Policy:
Since the Collegium
meets just once a week, it is crucial that each of you be present for every
rehearsal. Please notify the director by phone or email at least 24 hours in
advance if there is a problem that prevents you from attending a rehearsal
(absences for medical reasons will be excused only by a note from the doctor).
Please be on time to rehearsals and allow extra time if needed for getting
instruments ready and tuned (singers ready to go at 3:45pm, instrumentalists at
4:45pm).
In addition, we will be
holding extra sectional rehearsals for student members of the Collegium days
and times TBA. These will be scheduled ad hoc as
needed.
Grading System:
Grading is based on active participation, practice time, individual
effort and evidence of improving your part, and attendance (two unexcused
absences lowers grade a whole letter).
