For the Independent Research Project Paper students will need to find academic literature that will be cited in the text. Academic literature does NOT include articles from popular magazines (e.g., Time, Newsweek) does NOT include articles from magazines that popularize science (e.g., Natural History, Scientific American, Smithsonian). Scholarly sources in biology typically will have the same sections as your paper will have and ALWAYS have their own Literature Cited section. See Chapter 1 in Writing Papers in the Biological Sciences, Fourth Edition.

The Independent Research Project Paper will report and interpret the results of the independent project students completed in the laboratory. The format of the independent research project paper approximates the format of articles published by scientists in professional journals (title, authors, Abstract, Introduction, Materials & Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, & Literature Cited). The Introduction section must give relevant background based on academic sources derived from academic research (i.e., library research) that leads to the hypothesis by placing it in a larger biological context. Academic sources must be cited in the text in the name-year style outlined in Writing Papers in the Biological Sciences, Fourth Edition or in APA style. See Chapter 6 in Writing Papers in the Biological Sciences, Fourth Edition.

A session in the library with a member of the library faculty during a laboratory class period will go over basic research techniques and resources available at Regis. The following links will be some of those that students will need to use to complete the academic research needed for the independent project paper.

Regis Articles & Information Database Resources

The most relevant database resources for students in BL 263 are (from most to least relevant):

  • Biological and Medical Sciences [CSA, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts] - This is the most relevant resource that all students should use. It provides only abstracts.
After you identify a valuable source by its title and abstract, you will still need to obtain it in full text format. - Regis Library Guide to Locating Journal Articles in PDF Format

  • Wiley Interscience - This site may provide some relevant full-text articles. However, its holdings are very limited. Students should not use this as their only resource for academic research.

  • Lumen (Regis Library Catalog) - This is the resource that would allow students to search for books and other resources owned by the Regis Libraries.

  • OVID Gateway: MEDLINE - This resource provides links to sources in cellular & molecular biology and health related sciences. It provides only abstracts.

  • Expanded Academic ASAP - This resource provides links to a wide range of sources in a wide range of disciplines. It provides abstracts and some full-text articles .
