Ronnald Miera

Ronnald MieraBIOGRAPHICAL DATA

Ronn Miera was born on August 10,1966 in Denver, Colorado. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1984 and currently works as a distributor at K-Mart. He's unmarried and has resided in Brighton his entire life. He makes santos as a form of personal prayer and as a way of saying thank you to the Lord and to teach and evangelize.

GENERAL BACKGROUND

Although Ronn has always been a creative person, it wasn't until Denver's 1993 World Youth Day that he decided to become a santero. Having a strong and deep understanding of his Hispanic Heritage and his research on his ancestor Bernardo Miera y Pacheco. Ronn's studio is in the basement of his parents' house. He feels the ability to make santos is a gift from the Holy Spirit. Ronn participates in approximately four shows/festivals relating to santos per year. He was the first santero to have a booth at the Cinco de Mayo celebration on Santa Fe Drive. He felt was important to meet people where they are at, despite the fact that the event is often filled with rowdy drunken people.

SUBJECTS AND SOURCES

Ron has a large library of art history books, Catholic encyclopedias, scholarly articles, museum catalogs, holy cards, and coloring books. In making his art, he symbolically looks to Antonio Molleno and Don Bernardo Miera y Pacheco for inspiration. He tends to use the more simplified primary palette of Molleno blended with attempting large scale works akin to images of altarscreens of Miera y Pacheco.

MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES

Ronn has an affinity for bright colors and tends not to overdecorate his saints. He uses a blend of both traditional and commercial materials in his images. His first attempts were purely commercial but talks and discussions with New Mexican santeros have enabled him to work with the traditional methods. He still uses acrylic paints and milled lumber but he gessoes his boards with animal hide glue and uses homemade piñon sap and grain alcohol varnish. The iconography of his images is very much in keeping with historic images from northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.

ARTISTIC RECOGNITION

Ronn Miera is the first santero to produce his own newletter about his faith, his santero art, and upcoming events in the santos/santero community.
