Course Overview: <= /span>Acco= rding to the official course description, MT401 “provides an introduction to mathematical reasoning and proof writing.” We will cover these topics in the = course along with learning basic definitions you will see throughout upper division math courses. You will also l= earn to discuss and present mathematical ideas to your peers. The goal of the course is for you = to understand many of the basic ideas used in upper division math courses and = to be able to read and write a basic proof. Hopefully the style of the c= ourse will lead to the class working through problems or proofs together during c= lass time. This will necessitate m= ore preparation for you outside of class time.

Course Withdrawal Policy: Students are expected to know = and observe the published deadlines for (a) dropping the course and (b) withdra= wing from the course. These deadlines are published on the University’s Academic Calendar, which is available in the Bulletin, the course schedule = and is in the Dean’s Office. Please observe the following dates: Monday, August 31, 2009; Last Day to Withdraw from the Course (no refund): Friday, October 30, 2009. THESE DEADLINES ARE NOT FLEXI= BLE.

Homework

Homework will consist= of problems out of the book and any extra problems that are assigned. A = list of many of the homework assignments can be found on the course schedule.&nb= sp; Homework will be collected at the beginning of the class period on the day = it is due. No late homework will be accepted.= However, to compensate for the no late homework policy, at least one assign= ment will be dropped from the total when final grades are calculated.=

Homework should be done neatly and completely. Your work should be well presen= ted, as if you were explaining the problem to a fellow student. Note that often this will require some complete sentences, as well as numerical work,= to be included as part of the answer.

Small Homework

These a= re homework assignments that will be collected almost daily. They will typically consist of 1 o= r 2 problems. The idea behind thi= s is to keep you constantly thinking about the kind of math we’ll be worki= ng on in this class. Math really= is done best a little bit at a time on a constant basis instead of trying to s= pend 3 or 4 hours once a week working on it.&nb= sp;

Big Homework

These a= re homework assignments that will be collected about every two weeks. They will consist of 6-10 problems= . Here the idea is that sometimes th= inking about a problem for a day or two is not enough time. These problems may be more challen= ging, but it is expected that you will work on them a little each day.

Quizzes

We can’t discus= s math if we don’t understand basic terms and concepts. To ensure that we all keep up with= the pace of the course there will be periodic quizzes to check your understandi= ng.

These will be given a= bout every two weeks (when Big Homework assignments are not due). They will consist of about 4 probl= ems and hopefully will only take up 20-30 minutes of class time.

Final Project

Our final exam is sch= eduled for 8:00 a.m. on Monday, December 7, 2009.= This will be the deadline for the final project, the details of which will be discussed in a timely manner.
